'Sporting achievements give us self validation in a world where we feel we are just a number. No matter how fast or slow your time, each person’s sporting goals means something. To you and to me as your coach.”

— Dean Hughes

I have been coached by Dean for over 4 years. He was recommended to me as a coach who would get the most out of my ability, while working full time, to complete my first Ironman. I have not been coached before. Based mainly through TP, Dean has never left me unsure of where to go next, either on a daily training basis or which events would best fit my goals throughout the year.

Through his dedicated evaluation of my ability and constant feedback and monitoring, Dean has stopped me over training (my biggest enemy) and divided my time to get the most out of each discipline. His programs are both testing and interesting and keep me wanting more.

I can say that every event I had competed in, while being coached by Dean, I have exceeded my expectations. This has been achieved by both the exact training needed but also the correct taper for me and advice on how to cut down on mistakes. One such area I was struggling with was panic attacks while open water swimming - Dean managed to remove this.

Over the last 4 years, I consider Dean as a good friend. We communicate about training and personal matters frequently and regularly meet up, even though we live 100 miles apart.

Above all though, Dean has been an amazing source of advice and guidance in my training. This has helped me achieve good results in 3 full IM's, several middle distance triathlons, sprint tri's, marathons both on and off road and major cycling sportives.

I met Dean during my first six months of taking up cycling through British Cycling women’s coached sessions held on closed circuits in both Nottingham and Leicester. Many female riders in the area have benefited massively in confidence, skills and fitness through these sessions. I then went on to work with Dean and be coached remotely. Through the coaching and support I improved massively and was keen to take up racing. Without Deans invaluable support I wouldn’t have been able to take up racing and progress through the categories to gain my 3rd and 2nd category racing license.’

I turned to Dean in my second year of triathlon, as I realised I was not getting the most out of my time and myself, having planned two iron distance races that year. He astonished me by tuning in immediately to my fitness level, experience, and lifestyle.

He is able to provide clear workout instructions, with just the right amount of encouragement, knowing when to ease off and when to push me. Dean coached me to a Middle distance national title, GB age group qualification, and Kona qualification, from a starting point where I was enthusiastic but attempting too much without proper structure.

I have always had complete confidence in Dean’s knowledge and experience, both in the earlier days when I was a relative novice, and later when I had gained experience of my own. I think I am a fairly exacting athlete to coach, with insistence on maintaining certain family/home commitments as well as fitting training around my work as an Orthopaedic surgeon (with the associated tendency to query and challenge aspects of training science, which Dean has coped with robustly!).
